Designed by Christchurch architect Steven Fitzgerald. This holiday home takes full advantage of the amazing views of the Marlborough Sounds. A preliminary set out was followed by extensive site excavations before any construction could begin. One of the challenges being the limited access with many of the larger items later on in the project having to be craned off the road below onto the site above. Allowances were made during construction to ensure this was possible.
The first part of construction involved the forming of the waterproofed retained basement garage including the laundry and washroom. Interspan flooring above incorporated a 1.4 metre cantilevered concrete deck. This along with conventional concrete floor and pole platform overlaid with Matai tongue and groove providing the main floor which includes the main living and private areas. The extensive living area is enhanced with the skillion ceiling rising to a height of 3.6 metres at the North. The construction of this living area is mainly of complex structural steel with preformed steel purlins providing the roof structure. Large exterior aluminium joinery to 3 sides allows the owners to enjoy the panoramic views. Vast outdoor living area is belian decking partly covered with electronic louvres. A further 2 bunkrooms is set back up the hill in sympathy with the very steep site.
